York Fresh Food Farms is growing 52 weeks a year.

Since 2020, York Fresh Food Farms has been growing vegetables year round in four high tunnels (2,500 SF unheated, plastic greenhouses that house 300 to 500 plants each) that provide a protected environment and consistently higher quality vegetables. In keeping with York Fresh Food Farms’ mission of providing high quality, locally grown vegetables, York Fresh Food Farms has implemented vertical growing techniques in the high tunnels to maximize production, improve fruit quality and increase harvestability. With average summer daytime temperatures between 110° to 120°, the vegetables grown in the high tunnel grow faster and larger, and the controlled environment produces a more consistent product. Summer high tunnel crops are planted in March and include peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers (all grown vertically), also broccoli, kale and collard greens. Winter, cold-hardy greens (kale, collards, spinach, arugula, Swiss chard), herbs (cilantro, parsley), broccoli, and lettuces are planted in October/November and are harvested through March.

The commercial farming operation at York Fresh Food Farms runs year-round and follows organic farming practices. To maximize productivity of its urban farm acreage and grow as much produce as possible, York Fresh Food Farms follows advanced commercial growing methods with its row crops and in the Farm’s four high tunnels (large, unheated plastic greenhouses) and 2 heated greenhouses using intense growing techniques including drip irrigation, fertigation, integrated pest management, and succession planting. As a steward of the land it farms, York Fresh Food Farms’ sustainable farming includes an extensive program of regenerative cover cropping to add biomass, increase nutrients, and build up the health of the soil. The commercial farming operation at York Fresh Food Farms runs year-round and follows organic farming practices.
